Brazilian firms go online to attract Chinese clients
For any Brazilian business, keeping the country’s largest trading partner happy is important. And as Chinese demand for Brazil’s agricultural commodities and energy supply continues to rise, law firms too are capitalising on an important source of work.
Araújo e Policastro Advogados is one of the latest to jump on the Chinese bandwagon, introducing in early November a Mandarin language website targeted at both the Chinese community in São Paulo as well as investors based in the country.
“Language is a barrier. [The website] is the way our firm has come up with to give Chinese clients access to our information,” says partner Camila Araújo.
According to Araújo, members of the firm have also been making an effort to engage with potential Chinese clients through attending seminars and international congresses, as well as producing bulletins in Chinese about legislation in Brazil.
In Araújo’s experience, many Chinese people do not speak English or Portuguese, and making an effort to communicate information in their language is a useful means of attracting more business. “The site will help Chinese companies to become familiar with our firm, to learn about our expertise and to understand our principles. The new multi-language website will make it faster and easier to obtain all necessary the information,” agrees the firm’s founding partner, Theodoro Araújo.
All of the firms contained in Latin Lawyer 250, which lists Latin America’s leading business law firms, have English translations of their website, but Araújo e Policastro is among the first to have taken the step of introducing a Chinese site. Instead, many websites feature Spanish translations, with a couple of appearances made by French and German. (…)
